Rukum West Hosts District-Level Consultation to Establish Young Human Rights Defender Networks

In a significant step toward empowering the next generation of human rights advocates, a district-level consultation meeting was held in Rukum West, bringing together key civil society organizations and stakeholders to discuss the formation of young human rights defender (HRD) networks.

The meeting served as a platform for open dialogue, collaboration, and shared visioning around youth-led human rights advocacy. The event welcomed the participation of dedicated Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs), the Chairperson of the NGO Federation of Nepal, members of the Journalist's Federation, representatives of the Dalit NGO Federations of Rukum West, and a host of respected civil society leaders from across the district.

Each voice in the room brought unique insights into the challenges young people face when defending human rights in their communities. Discussions centered on building safe, inclusive spaces where youth – especially from marginalized backgrounds – can organize, learn, and lead with confidence and courage.

Participants emphasized the urgent need for intergenerational cooperation, policy-level support, and continuous capacity building to ensure young defenders are equipped with the tools and knowledge they need to advocate effectively and safely. The presence and support of experienced HRDs and WHRDs added immense value to the discussions, providing guidance and mentorship to the emerging youth leaders.
