Sushil Sunar, a 23-year-old youth from Birendranagar Municipality-4, Krishnatol, Surkhet, is currently studying in the BBS 4th year at Sitapaila Campus. With a strong interest in social work and the human rights movement, he has voluntarily started his journey as an active, energetic, dedicated youth leader committed to social justice and human rights campaigns.
His journey in social work began at an early age as a child club member. Later, he served as the Chairman of Nawajyoti. Youth Club. Similarly, he is affiliated with Amnesty International Nepal (Treasurer), Drishti Nepal (General Secretary), and BaaS Nepal (Sub Secretary). Through these platforms, he engaged with key stakeholders, held local leaders accountable, and advocated for policy changes in critical areas such as human rights, education, gender equality, and youth empowerment.
Recognizing his outstanding contributions, ROYM Nepal selected him as a top candidate in their Young Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Mapping Program. This opportunity allowed him to join the Young Human Rights Defenders Network, where he received training on human rights advocacy, networking, and gender-sensitive approaches to activism. He further enhanced his skills by participating in roundtable discussions, partnership-building programs, and collaborative initiatives.
He has initiated several impactful activities. He advocated for education access for underprivileged children, conducted awareness street dramas against drug abuse, and supported the elderly through coordination with NGOs/INGOs. He helped raise awareness through play card campaigns and collaborated with local governments and police in anti-drug and anti-violence programs. His involvement in climate justice campaigns, anti-corruption conferences, and school-level human rights education laid the groundwork for his deeper engagement.
The platform enabled him to connect with stakeholders and raise his voice on key governance issues, contributing to policy changes in areas such as youth rights, the fight against child marriage, climate justice, anti-drug and tobacco advocacy, caste-based discrimination, education, gender equality, youth empowerment, and digital security.
The Young Human Rights Defenders Network became a vital platform for accessing opportunities related to capacity building and personality development. It fostered active participation and solidarity in the promotion and protection of human rights, ultimately contributing to the creation of a just, inclusive, and accountable society.
